LISTEN TOMr. Robotic

Chicago MC jokes about DJs asking him for the edited versions of his songs though he doesn’t use profanity

Formally known as Bullet, Mr. Robotic has been one of the most universally accepted MCs to come out of the Windy City in some time. His fun and energetic yet clean rhymes has gained him plays on all sorts or radio and TV programming. Currently, Mr.Robotic is working on his EP Boy in the band: A Love StorY which is sure to get the clubs bouncing to his pop/electro/hip-hop sound.

On Wax: Your name was Bullet but you changed it to Mr. Robotic. Why the change?
Mr. Robotic:
I made the change from Bullet to Mr.Robotic because I initially got the name Bullet in high school from how my head used to be shaped. Everyone knew me as that and when I started rapping I kept that name. The issue was the music didn’t match my name. I was making pop/electro/hip-hop music with a name like “Bullet” I never understood that from a marketing perspective. I knew how to brand myself because everything I did was dealing with space and planets. But I guess it still had that negative connotation.

I always wanted to change my name but never knew to what. So one day I was recording a record called “Mr.Robotic” which happens to be my biggest song and it hit the internet and everyone started calling me that. So I went from Bullet to a.k.a. Mr.Robotic. I couldn’t market two names so when my website dropped I made the switch to the name. It describes me and my music to the tee.

On Wax: Robots seem to be the popular in music with Daft Punk producing the soundtrack for the Tron sequel or even Janelle Monae’s The ArchAndriod. What’s your reason for the Robot explosion?
Mr. Robotic:
I have no idea why other people do it. For me I feel like I’ve been on this for years. I always had these types of songs. For me though, Mr.Robotic isn’t just about my sound but more of an emotion of trying not to have emotions. On my first project that came out 2008 I had an interview from Kanye that was my intro. He was talking about how while other people are clubbing he is working. He lives and breathes music. He is a Robot you can’t offend a robot. I heard that and it felt like me! It’s how I think and operate. So two years later I just happened to be Mr.Robotic. I call it manifest destiny (laughter).

On Wax: So what has Mr. Robotic been up to?
Mr. Robotic:
I’ve just been working hard breaking my music in different platforms. Just accomplishing things in a different way, while eating my favorite cereal.

On Wax: How would you describe your sound?
Mr. Robotic:
My sound is different but still fits in a mainstream format. I like to call it pop mixed with electro mixed with hip-hop and singer/songwriter.

On Wax: How did you get into music?
Mr. Robotic:
I got into music when I was 16. I started off as a battle rapper. I then went on to college at Columbia College Chicago. I was the best battle rapper there and that’s how I made a name for myself. I met my producer there and he pretty much got me into writing songs. Then I just worked on my own when it came to practicing songs and different rhyme schemes and hooks. Also going to college for music business I realized I love business. So basically, I’m my own business. I love the fact I can do music and do the business side for myself too.

On Wax: You don’t use profanity in your music, what was your choice in keeping from cursing?
Mr. Robotic:
Well honestly the first reason was I recorded a song and I had profanity in it and I had to go back and pay to get it re-edited. Then the 2nd reason was because I realized kids listen to my music. And this is back when I was under my old name. I was doing charity events. So it was just the right thing to do. It’s not like it’s noticeable that I don’t curse. People sometimes still ask me for edited versions until I tell them it’s no cursing (Laughter).

On Wax: Your music has been featured on a lot of TV Shows and programs. Which TV shows have you been featured on and how did you do it?
Mr. Robotic:
Most recently I’ve been featured on ESPN, MTV,CW, E!, an online video game and got some movies coming up. I do it by basically providing the supply for the demand with people who have the connections. I do non-exclusive deals with them so I’m not tied down to one person pitching music for me.

On Wax: Your working on an EP. What should listeners expect and are you working on a full on LP for the future?
Mr. Robotic:
The EP is called Boy in the band: A Love StorY. It’s basically a conceptual piece of work but with a mainstream sound. So, it’s kind of talking about real situations in song format. The songs are fun yet tell a story. It’s about an entertainer trying to balance being that and trying to have a relationship. I’m really excited about it. I have songs album ready for when I have my deal. I love to be prepared!

On Wax: Talk about your single “Kiss and Tell.”
Mr. Robotic:
My single Kiss and Tell became the single from this EP just because it was the theme song to the TV special on E! called Kiss and Tell: The Other Woman Speaks. It was just smart marketing on my end but also it’s the 2nd song on the EP! Good summer record its fun.

On Wax: Anything our readers should know and how can fans keep in touch with you?
Mr. Robotic:
Fans can keep in touch with me online and I thank you all for all of the amazing support. Definitely won’t be disappointed!
